League of Utah Writers
The League of Utah Writers is a non-profit organization dedicated to offering friendship, education, and encouragement to the writers of Utah. The League of Utah Writers has almost 400 members in 14 chapters located across the state. New members are always welcome.
About Us
Our organization is dedicated to the encouragement and improvement of all writers in their writing skills. Members are writers with various interests at all levels of skill and professionalism, and they meet in local chapters around the state to write, read, and discuss their work. They share ideas and expertise on the art of writing. Special guests may be invited to address chapter meetings.
Chapter meetings are open to the public and new members are always welcome. For more information, contact the president of the chapter nearest you.

As a result of the November 14, 2009, State Board Meeting, we established some new guidelines for membership for new and current members. First, we have eliminated the “universal” January 1st due date for new members. New members in 2010 will pay the yearly dues of $24 when joining. No more calculating $2 per month from the date of joining to arrive at a January 1st due date for the following year. The expiration date for new members will be 12 months from the date of joining. Example: Jane Doe joins LUW at Spring Workshop in April 2010. She pays $24 and her expiration date is April 1, 2011.
Second, for current members: If you already have a January 1st due date, please keep January 1st as your expiration date for 2010 forward. Example: John Doe joined at September 2009 Round Up and paid $8 for September 2009 to January 2010, plus $24 to bring his expiration date to January 1, 2011. John is already paid for all of 2010 and his next dues expiration date is January 1, 2011. John will keep his January 1st expiration date.
Third, there are always exceptions to every rule. If a current member has an extreme and unusual problem with the January 1st due date, he or she should contact either their chapter president or the League Membership Chair. An exception may be made only once in a person’s lifetime.
And last, but definitely not least: eligibility for the annual Writing Contest and for Spring Workshop. The hard and fast, unchangeable rule is: Your dues must be paid in full for the current year in order to qualify for ANY membership benefits, including but not limited to reduced entry fees for the Writing Contest, free attendance at Spring Workshop and/or reduced fees for Roundup.
Reminders for dues payments will be sent periodically throughout the year by email and/or in The Lariat, etc. However, membership eligibility for all League activities is primarily the responsibility of the member.
For any questions, please contact: Mary Barnes. Thank you in advance for all you do to make the League of Utah Writers a wonderful and exciting association to be part of.
